How to select the best vase for your flowers?

  • 3 min read

A beautiful bouquet of flowers, whether for a friend, family member, colleague, or yourself, is guaranteed to put a smile on a special someone's face and can brighten even the darkest of days. But, if you want to take it a step further, why not include a vase as well?

There are vases to suit all tastes and styles, from simple, sophisticated glass designs to brightly colored vessels, each promising to add that extra "wow factor" to your blooms.

Selecting the perfect vase for the job

When it comes to selecting the ideal vase, there are numerous factors to consider, just as there are numerous ways to bring out the best in your blooms. Here are a few key things to consider, ranging from colors, textures, and shapes to trying something out of the ordinary...

Size

First and foremost, you must select the appropriate vase size. It's pointless to try to fit a large bouquet into a small display case. Similarly, placing a smaller bouquet in an overly large vase will only make your flowers look misplaced.

Colour

Consider where the vase will be placed and what kind of flowers it will hold. Choose a neutral vase that will complement all bloom colors or a color-contrasting vessel, such as a blue vase for orange flowers or a yellow container for purple blooms, to ensure your flowers look their best. If you want to display your flowers in a room with neutral decor, choose a contemporary vessel in a neutral color. Choose a vase that is patterned, has a bright color, or is embellished with various decorations if you prefer a more eclectic style.

Height

As well as considering the breadth of your vase, it’s important to consider the height too. Too short a vase will cause flowers to bend over the edge of the vase or worse still, topple over. A vase that is too tall however will hide blooms, which defeats the object of displaying flowers as a whole.

Shape

Do you know the difference between a bud vase and a column vase? If not, don't worry; we're here to help! When it comes to displaying different types of flowers, understanding the shape, style, height, and breadth of your vase is crucial. A robust, short square vase, for example, is designed for shorter, wider blooms, whereas tall, slender vases are better suited to elegant, long flowers like delphiniums.

Aside from the types of flowers you have, think about the amount of space you have in your home or office to work with. A tall, light vase is more appropriate for use on a shelving unit or mantelpiece. Something more solid may be preferable when creating a focal point in the center of a table.

Traditional isn’t always the answer

Vases do not need to be identical in shape. Various vessels, such as milk bottles, jam jars, watering cans, colored bottles, and more, are now being used by interior designers to display blooms of all shapes and sizes. Don't be afraid to get creative if you don't have a traditional vase on hand.

Some key types of a vase

BUD VASES: As the name implies, a bud vase is made for extremely delicate stems, such as those with buds rather than blooms. Flowers like lily of the valley, eucalyptus, ranunculus, and gypsophila thrive in these vases.

SQUARE VASES: This vase style is more contemporary and one-of-a-kind. They are available in a variety of heights and are perfect for displaying dense floral arrangements such as violets, tulips, hydrangeas, anemones, or frangipanis.

ROUND VASES: A round vase is softer in style and better suited to those with classic tastes. Rose bouquets, peonies, snapdragons, delphinium, dianthus, tulips, alstroemerias, and gerberas are frequently displayed in these vases.
